Google's Project Tango effort to pack 3D
mapping in a smartphone will reportedly hit
the scene next month, starting with the
Lenovo Phab2 Pro.
After Google's Project Ara got canceled and
Lenovo's Phab2 Pro was delayed, there was a
lot of uncertainty surrounding Project Tango.
The Phab2 Pro was supposed to launch this
summer as Google's first Project Tango
smartphone, but was delayed to a vague "fall"
release.
Some wondered whether Project Tango would
ever see the light of day, but it now seems
that it will — and soon. According to CNET,
Google's Clay Bavor confirmed that Project
Tango's Lenovo Phab2 Pro is all set to debut
in November.
For those unfamiliar with the massive phone,
the Lenovo Phab2 Pro boasts a 6.4-inch
display and 3D mapping capabilities, tracking
your surroundings and displaying content in
an augmented reality manner like it's right
there in front of you. This could be greatly
useful in various scenarios where visualization
is essential, such as redecorating or picking
out new furniture.
The phablet packs a Snapdragon 652
processor specifically optimized for Tango
apps, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, microSD
support for up to 126 GB of additional
storage, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the
software side. The massive 6.4-inch display
has a QHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels
and can adapt to different lighting conditions.
The Lenovo Phab2 Pro will come at a
$499 price point unlocked and go on sale in
the United States sometime in November,
albeit a specific date is not available at this
point.
It's worth pointing that while the new Google
Pixel smartphones will play nice with the
Daydream VR headset, the Lenovo Phab2 Pro
will not be compatible because it doesn't
have an AMOLED display to properly support
VR.
Consequently, those looking to buy a new
Google phone next month may want to think
twice whether they want AR or VR. Both the
Lenovo Phab2 Pro and the Google Pixels will
go on sale in November, but they will offer
different experiences.
If you're looking for augmented reality, the
Lenovo Phab2 Pro should do the trick. If VR is
more up your alley, the new Google Pixel and
Pixel XL will be the first two smartphones that
are Daydream VR-ready.
Google has yet to make an official
announcement regarding Project Tango and
the Lenovo Phab2 Pro release, but we'll let
you know as soon as it does.

The Sony Xperia XZ is now available for
purchase unlocked and contract-free in the
United States, but it comes with quite a hefty
price point.
The Xperia XZ costs a whopping $699.99, a
price point that puts it at the steep end of
the smartphone market.
The smartphone made its debut back at IFA
2016 but has just now made its way to the
United States, after going up for preorder last
month. Sony is not selling the device itself and
it hasn't teamed up with any carriers either,
instead relying on Amazon.
There's no doubt that the Sony Xperia XZ has
some high-end features, but some areas such
as the display or RAM may seem lackluster for
such a high price, compared to other top
flagships on the market.
For those unfamiliar with Sony's latest
flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ sports a
5.2-inch full HD display, which translates to a
resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. While this
resolution displays crisp visuals on a 5.2-inch
panel, it's still behind rival flagships that
boast QHD resolutions of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels
and come at the same price point as the
Xperia XZ, or lower.
Other specs of the Xperia XZ include a
powerful Snapdragon 820 processor, 3 GB of
RAM, a 23-megapixel rear camera, a 13-
megapixel front shooter, and a 2,900 mAh
battery to keep the lights on. The handset
comes with 32 GB of internal storage capacity,
expandable via microSD.
The smartphone wraps it all up in a sleek
metal body that makes it look and feel
premium.
There's no doubt that the Xperia XZ has
plenty to bring to the table. Nevertheless,
that high $699.99 price point might be a deal-
breaker for many prospective customers. Rival
handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S7
have already been available for a while now
and are significantly cheaper at this point, so
the Xperia XZ is making an expensive
proposition for what it has to offer.
For those who would still like to buy the
device regardless of its premium price point,
Amazon is selling the Sony Xperia XZ in
Platinum and Graphite Black color options.
The Forest Blue avatar is not in the mix, at
least not at this point.
Lastly, it's worth pointing out that the Sony
Xperia XZ selling in the United States does not
have a fingerprint scanner like the
international versions of the device.
What do you think of the Xperia XZ at a
$699.99 price point, considering its
specifications? Worth it, or a deal-breaker?

Toyota is planning to release the Kirobo Mini,
a baby-like humanoid robot, into the market
in early 2017.
The robot was unveiled by Toyota a year ago
at the Tokyo Motor Show. While other
companies at the event showed off new cars
and car-related technology, Toyota also had
the Kirobo Mini on display.
The Kirobo Mini is a version of the Kirobo
robot that was a part of several experiments
up in space at the International Space
Station. The new robot, however, is slightly
smaller and built for the consumer market.
The Kirobo Mini is only 4 inches tall and is
small enough to fit inside the cupholder of a
car. Toyota is claiming that the robot
can respond to human emotions and
animatedly engage in conversations with its
owners with blinking eyes and wagging limbs.
For example, if the robot's owner is feeling
down, it will wobble and ask, "Why are you
sad?" If the owner will suddenly brake while
driving, the robot will shout, "That was scary!"
Videos that demonstrate the capabilities of
the Kirobo Mini show the robot entertaining
children, chatting with an old woman and
encouraging a fresh graduate in preparation
for in interview.
Its name is a combination of the Japanese
words for hope and robot, and it is being
positioned by Toyota as a communication
partner that can provide companionship to its
owners. The Kirobo Mini will be released just
as surveys held among Japanese consumers
reveal a declining interest in cars.
With a cradle that will fit inside the cupholder
of a car, the Kirobo Mini can always be
accessible as a companion even while in the
vehicle, possibly increasing interest in cars for
Japanese consumers.
In addition to looking to bring back interest in
cars, the Kirobo Mini also looks to tap into a
demographic trend in the Asian country,
where decreasing birth rates have forced
many women to grow old without children.
The Japanese government has looked at
utilizing robots to take up the roles left
behind by humans due to the country's
thinning population. The Kirobo Mini,
meanwhile, will look to establish emotional
connections with owners in an aging Japan.
The Kirobo Mini, which will carry a price tag
of 39,800 yen, equivalent to about $400, will
be sold in dealerships of Toyota in Tokyo and
in the area surrounding Toyota's Nagoya
headquarters.

Oculus has released an update that fixes
battery drain and overheating problems with
some Samsung devices.
Several owners of Samsung Galaxy S6 edge,
Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have
complained that the Oculus app on their
device is affecting their phone's battery life.
Users say the app is causing their device's
CPU to run very high, which is also happening
when the app is not being used. This problem
prevents the phone from shifting to sleep
mode and also interrupts other apps.
Samsung mobile phone owners have been
complaining about the smartphone issues on
many forums over the past few days.
"What started it was YouTube app pausing
video every 5-10 seconds. Which it will do
under certain conditions of other heavy app
use. After some investigative work noticed
Oculus Home app was constantly dropping off
the Battery Usage app list and refreshing. It
appears it's closing and restarting," said a
user. "Even on a charger was losing 1% batt
every 30 seconds."
The issues with the Oculus app resulted in
many users deleting it from their phones.
Some users who took this action found that
the battery drain issue was fixed.
"I've removed all the Oculus and Gear VR
apps, rebooted and my phone is back to
normal. It actually might be better than
normal. I've been sitting at 79% for about 10
mins of reddit browsing and my s7e seems
cooler than its been in a long time. Now I'm
wondering of these apps have been subtly
draining my battery even before this issue
happened. I guess I'll know better after a full
day of use," wrote a Redditor.
Now Oculus has acknowledged the the issue
caused by its app and the company has rolled
out a fix.
"We recently pushed an update to the Oculus
app that inadvertently caused some people to
experience phone battery drain. The team has
issued a fix that prompts people to update
the Oculus software when they open the
Oculus app. If they do not see the prompt,
then the phone has been automatically
updated and no further action is needed,"
Oculus told Gizmodo.
Following the update released by Oculus,
owners of Galaxy Gear VR will be able to
enjoy virtual reality via their compatible
Samsung device once again, without any
hassle.
Hopefully, Oculus has done enough to win
back the confidence of Samsung device
owners as the Korean company is already
under a lot of pressure after the entire
battery explosion issue with the Galaxy Note
7.

If you’ve been waiting for the launch of Nokia’s new Android device, I got a bit of good news.
We’ve gathered some details of the new device that was spotted on GeekBench last week. The name? Nokia D1C.
Specs-wise, you are looking at the latest octa-core Snapdragon 430 SoC, with each core clocked at 1.4GHz, it would also be powered by a 3GB of RAM and would run Android 7.0 Nougat straight out of the box. Despite this impressive specs, rumor has it that it might be a mid-range device.
Also, there might be another high-end device from Nokia which would feature a premium metal body, large display, fingerprint scanner and more. No further details on this one, though.
In my opinion, Nokia going the mid-range way (Hopefully with an affordable price tag) might be one of the best strategies they can employ to win back their customers.
No words on when we’d see these devices, but words have it that it might be a 2017 reveal.

The pros at DxOMark put it to the test, and
while it did get an overall score of 86 which is
quite high, it still landed the iPhone 7 in 3rd
place, behind six other smartphones.
DxOmark noted that the iPhone 7 camera
performed well in both outdoor and indoor
scenarios, scoring high in detail preservation
and image stabilization
They, however, noticed that the iPhone 7’s
camera faltered slightly in low-light conditions.
Also, the phase detection AF wasn’t
completely repeatable in some cases with the
LED flash producing dark corners.
The two major devices that trumped the
iPhone 7 include the HTC 10 and the Galaxy
S7 Edge.
On the flip side, this result bodes well for the
iPhone 7 Plus (Which they haven’t tested, yet)
since it comes with dual cameras, a feature
that should make it perform better than its
sibling.

Samsung said Thursday it would
resume sales of new Galaxy Note 7
smartphones in South Korea this week,
hoping to turn the page on the
troubled device after an ongoing
global recall prompted by battery
explosions.
The company on September 2
suspended sales of the oversized
“phablet” and recalled 2.5 million
units shipped worldwide after faulty
batteries caused the phones to explode
while charging.
With the recall underway in 10
nations where the device had been
launched, 60 percent of users in
Samsung’s key market, the US, had
swapped their handsets for
replacements provided by the
company, as of Tuesday.
Eighty percent of Note 7 customers are
expected to complete the exchange this
week in South Korea, where sales of
new phones equipped with fault-free
batteries will resume on Saturday,
Samsung said in a statement.
The new Note 7 will gradually hit
stores in other markets, including
some European countries on October
28, the company said.
The unprecedented recall, the first
involving Samsung’s flagship
smartphone, has dealt a blow to the
reputation of the South Korean
electronics giant — also the world’s
largest smartphone maker.
With photos of charred phones
flooding social media, Samsung is
desperate to avoid a full-blown
disaster that could cost billions and
damage its image further.
But customers have reportedly
complained that the replacement
devices were overheating during calls
and its batteries draining too quickly,
a sign that the company’s troubles are
not over yet.
A Samsung spokeswoman
acknowledged the concerns but said
they only amounted to “a few
individual cases”.
“We would like to reassure everyone
that new Note 7 phones are operating
properly and pose no safety concerns,”
she said, adding the firm was working
to address the complaints.
The Note 7 was meant to kick start
growth this year as Samsung struggles
to boost sales, squeezed by Apple in
the high-end sector and Chinese rivals
in the low-end market.
But the recall has piled more pressure
on the company, sparking alarm
among global air carriers and safety
regulators, which banned the device
on flights.
Samsung is also facing a class-action
lawsuit in the US state of New Jersey
over complaints that some of its
washing machines had exploded in
their owners’ homes.
The company said Wednesday it was
in discussions with the US Consumer
Product Safety Commission to address
the concerns of affected customers.

I think Facebook felt Rihanna’s pain when
she sang that song which is why they’ve
provided a better means of reminding friends
that owe you money — they don’t want you
using Rihanna’s methods.
Anyway, Facebook Messenger will tell your
friends that they owe you money and vice
versa. So, for every time you use a particular
word or phrase such as ‘IOU,’ ‘or you owe
me,’ Facebook Messenger will prompt users
to make the payment on the spot.
As seen in the screenshot above, the
reminder is a clickable link that takes you to
the payment portal (P.S. If you don’t know by
now, Messenger supports peer-to-peer
payment) where your friend can make the
payment instantly.
Whether or not this would be effective
remains to be seen, but this over Rihanna’s
method!

Apple has more or less kept mum about the
MacBook Air 2016, but that doesn't mean
there aren't any rumors and whatnot making
rounds online.
While the talks surrounding the thin notebook
aren't that many, they are still worth
checking out to get an idea of what could be
in store, and to get everyone up to speed of
what's up, here's a roundup of how the
device in question could turn out to be.
Trackpad Compatible With Apple Pencil
To start things off, the MacBook Air 2016 is
said to don a trackpad where users can use
an improved Apple Pencil on.
Possibly corroborating this is the patent titled
"Stylus with inertial sensor," which the
Cupertino brand filed back on Nov. 14, 2016.
"Inertial sensor input may be gathered when
operating the stylus in one or more inertial
sensor input modes such as an air mouse
mode, a rotational controller mode, a joystick
mode, and/or other inertial sensor input
modes," a portion of its description reads.
Good-Bye 11 Inches, Hello 15 Inches
According to TechRadar, Apple is going to
change the lineup, doing away with the 11-
inch variant for a 15-inch version instead.
That means the next iterations of the
notebook will generally be larger.
Intel Skylake Under The Hood, But What About
Kaby Lake?
Forbes' Brooke Crothers got in touch with
Director of Tablet and Notebook PCs at IHS
Markit Technology Rhoda Alexander who said
that the "inclusion of Kaby Lake chips appears
unlikely." In other words, finding Intel Skylake
processors under the hoods of the MacBook
Air 2016 units is probably going to be the
case.
Upgrades Across The Board
To no one's surprise, there are a couple of
expected upgrades here and there, including
more RAM, improved cooling components and
batteries, lighter weight and an even thinner
form factor.
On top of all that, it could have a USB Type-C
port, and that just makes sense out of the
speculations regarding a slimmer design, as it
allows the device to shed off a few more
millimeters.
September Or October Release Date
Coming again from Crothers, Alexander said
that the "products will launch in September or
October of 2016." Given that there are only a
few days left in September, the public could
start seeing the MacBook Air 2016 in a few
days or about north of 30 days — under the
assumption that this is in fact the case, that
is.
Will It Even Materialize, Or Will The MacBook
Pro 2016 Take Its Place For Good?
News about Apple ditching the MacBook Air
2016 in favor of the MacBook Pro 2016 made
the headlines back in July, but based on
Crothers' conversation with Alexander, that
may not be the case.
However, it's still worth pointing out that
Apple CEO Tim Cook believes that the
successor to the MacBook Air is the iPad Pro
and that the thin laptop is said to be capable
of living on without any update. To put two
and two together, the Cupertino brand may
not be focusing on the next iteration of the
device at all.
The Bottom Line
There you have it: all the fruits of the
MacBook Air 2016 rumor mill. As a disclaimer
of sorts, all these bits of info should be taken
with the usual grain of salt, and until Apple
gives an official announcement, everyone's
guess is as good as anyone else's. However,
these do somewhat paint a picture of the
upcoming or killed-off device.
What do you think of the talk in town
regarding the notebook? Hit us up in the
comments section below, especially about
whether or not you want to see any of these
features on the Apple-branded laptop — that
is, if it'll indeed hit the shelves.

Snapchat is Snapchat no more.
The company's CEO Evan Spiegel announced
on Saturday, Sept. 24 that it has officially
changed its name, which will now be Snap
Inc.
This is a major announcement that has many
people scratching their heads as to why the
company would want to rebrand now.
Since launching in September of 2011, the
company has grown to be one of the most
popular apps, with about 100 million daily
active users.
What started as a platform known for sexting
and commonly used among teens, Snap has
become the must-have messaging app for
millennials looking to interact with friends
(and not their family on Facebook) and
provide in-the-moment sneak peeks of their
day to others in a way staged Instagram
photos can't. It's even a platform now
popular among celebrities, allowing followers
to see what they are up to on any given day,
giving normal folk a look into their lavish live.
Spiegel revealed in a a blog post that the
decision to ditch the "chat" was made
because the company plans to expand to be
more than just a messaging app.
In a separate blog post, the company
announced its plans to release $130 wearable
glasses called Spectacles that are the more
hip version of the geeky Google Glass. The
sunglasses, which will be available in three
trendy colors, are equipped with a wireless
video camera that allows the user to snap
Memories and share them directly on the app.
It will take some time to get used to just
saying Snap.
Yes, a new dawn is upon Snap. And unlike
Instagram's sunset logo fail, users can expect
it will have no problems with rebranding.
