Workers in the Delta State council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have urgued on the government to intervene in the five years salaries and allowances being owed employees by the Delta Steel Company (DSC), Aladja, Delta State.
Speaking recently, the Chairman of NLC, Delta State, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said Congress is very worried and sad that DSC workers have become the sacrificial lambs for the bureaucratic ritual between Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), and the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE).
He said, “at the moment, we have lost count of the workers that had died in DSC as a result of Federal Government’s attitude towards their welfare. It is about time to hold someone accountable for what is happening in DSC and its workers.
Akporeha urged the Federal Government to intervene in the endless buck passing by Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria and the Bureau for Public Enterprise, to secure a smooth commencement of operations by the new management so that the workers can be settled.
“Several months after taking over the new management of DSC, Premium Steel and Mines Limited, is yet to commence operations and other activities that will enable them clear the backlog of worker’s salaries and allowances due to endless protocols by the government agencies involved. How can our nation ever attain sustainable economic diversification at this rate when bureaucratic bottlenecks in government agencies seem to slow down activities of investors while workers can’t get their pay? he asked.
He expressed hope that both BPE and AMCON will resolve all outstanding labour related issues, and provide the enabling environment for Premium Steel and Mines to immediately clear the backlog of workers’ salaries.
Akporeha stated that Congress might be compelled to mobilise workers on industrial action in support of DSC workers if the Federal Government failed to intervene as Congress can no longer sit back and watch DSC workers transform from payroll to death toll.
